Game’s on! Who will you nominate?
The Eat Game Awards is an exciting new partnership between Purdey, Boisdale and Taste of Game, which will involve a national search to find the champions of British game and reward their success and passion.
The Eat Game Awards is, first and foremost, about giving recognition to those outlets and individuals who champion game but it also has a mission: to develop the rise in popularity of game, and to encourage a wider audience to experience the delights of this wild and delicious harvest. As Allie Stanilas, marketing communications manager at Purdey, says: “It’s a really exciting time for game. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a huge rise in game appearing on menus of pubs and restaurants, as well as on supermarket shelves and being used by TV chefs. These awards are a great way to celebrate that, and to encourage more people to eat game.” The Awards will also be supporting a charity: The Country Food Trust, which aims to feed those in need with game meat casseroles packaged in long-life pouches.

How the awards work
Allie explains that there are 10 categories: “These were chosen to best represent the wide range of places you might see game – we wanted to celebrate not only individuals who cook and champion game, but also butchers or larger retailers.”
The 10 categories are as follows:
- Best Restaurant regularly serving game
- Best Pub regularly serving game
- Best Chef regularly serving game
- Best Chef Regularly Cooking Game
- Best Game Farmers Market Stall including Street Food
- Best Added Value Game Meat Product
- Best multiple retailer selling game
- Best Small Retailer selling game
- Best Game Butcher
- Game Hero and Champion of Champions
With the exception of the final two categories, all the winners will be determined entirely by public vote, while Game Hero, though nominated for by the public will be decided by a panel of judges. The Champion of Champions will be the overall winner from all categories, also decided by a panel of judges. These Awards are a fantastic demonstration of the popularity of game today, not only to those who shoot, but to a wider public as well.
The process of the Awards is simple: nominations can be submitted online until 28 February 2018. The submissions will be collated and the 10 strongest nominees in each category will then be put to the public vote online, which will be open from 1 June 2018 to 30 August 2018, with an awards ceremony being held at Boisdale in Canary Warf, London. As Allie says, “We’re hoping that gameshooters but also the wider public get really involved in this – it’s so exciting, and we have got some fantastic support from public figures such as William Sitwell and JB Gill, who is an ambassador. This is relevant not only to foodies, but to the shooting industry as a whole – it’s a chance to show a much wider audience that game is not only a delicious meat, but also a natural and healthy food choice.”
