GunsOnPegs Kit Box: Härkila Stornoway Active Jacket and Trousers

GunsOnPegs review the Härkila Stornoway Active Jacket and Trousers and put them through their paces in a variety of conditions in Europe.

Best feature: It is difficult to pick out a best feature to the Stornoway as it is a very good all round jacket; well cut, lightweight, warm, waterproof with a removable hood, waterproof zips, great hand warmer pockets and a radio/phone pocket. It is fantastic for stalking or walked up shooting in all conditions; as you can layer up if it is particularly cold or use the zip for ventilation in a warmer climate.

Worst feature

I personally like a poachers pocket on the back of my jackets, but that is very much a preference and I am sure that many would not miss it.

The Stornoway Jacket

Most surprising feature

The major feature in the Stornoway jacket and trousers is the new HWS membrane, which is one of the first none Gore-Tex products they have made at Harkila. The up side is that they have full control over it as they attempt to reduce the cost of their products without reducing the quality (something which it seemed like they have achieved with the Stornoway range).

Being a zip-up jacket as opposed to a smock was a huge advantage on a warm Septembers day walked up days grouse shooting in Scotland as I could regulate my temperature more easily.

Unique selling point: The colour/pattern is unique to me and the jacket really benefits from being lightweight, superbly cut and very technical, whilst having a tweed pattern which blends fantastically with a number of habitats: as you can see in the images below.

Fortunately the rain stopped for half an hour, giving us time for a photo: but other than that it was fairly relentless for 3 days solid when we were grouse hunting in Sweden.

Why I should consider this product

It is exceptionally versatile and a fantastic blend between tradition, with its printed tweed pattern and technical; utilising the new HWS membrane technology which makes it silent, windproof and waterproof.

Cooler conditions in the Tyrol Mountains in Austria, where I was hunting chamois.

Designed for use in what kind of weather

I see this jacket as a very strong all-rounder. Being a zip-up rather than a smock, it is perfect for both wet and dry conditions. It has a very good detachable hood but if you start to get warm, you have the option of unzipping it slightly.

I wore this jacket in September over a couple of very warm days walked up grouse shooting, I also wore it in cooler conditions chamois stalking in the tops of the Tyrol mountains and in very wet weather chasing grouse in northern Sweden so it is certainly versatile!
