Anyone who has spent any time in the world of field sports in the last two decades will instantaneously identify with the brand that is Dubarry. The Irish footwear manufacturer has become such a fixture that Dubarry is practically part of the DNA of the modern country sports world. A combination of focused and intelligent marketing, sheer hard work and a product which continually delivers has enshrined this premium brand within the psyche of field sports enthusiasts.

The company was founded in 1937 in Ballinasloe in the heart of County Galway on Ireland’s glorious West Coast, and its signature footwear is the Galway boot, named after the beautiful town of horse racing fame. Out there on the Atlantic coast the landscape is rugged and breathtaking, and the designers of the boot drew their inspiration from this magnificent countryside. The hard wearing elements of Dubarry's homeland are echoed in the durability of the boot, while the leathers signify the natural beauty.
Perfect pedigree
But the good people at Dubarry do not limit their talents to full-length boots, as the arrival of the Goodyear Welted range of Chelsea boots, lace up boots and brogues demonstrates. These boots are crafted from Dubarry’s signature DryFast-DrySoft™ water resistant leathers and the Goodyear welted sole. As a result they are ideal for both formal and classic country casual style.
The Fermanagh Chelsea boot features the welted sole, which is constructed with a rubber outsole for sure-footed safety, and a full leather insole for pure comfort. The water resistant leather gives the boot a rugged yet smart appearance and they are certainly suitable for both formal and casual wear. Whether you are looking for something smart and convenient to wear before and after shoot day, an everyday boot for work or something for Saturday night, this all-rounder will suit all your needs. And you will have that reassurance which only comes from the very best of brands.
(*One word of warning though, it’s quite a narrow fit so those with wider ankles and feet may struggle.)
With an RRP of £299 one expects premium materials, the best craftsmanship, style, comfort and longevity and you won’t be disappointed. Of course no business can afford to rest on its laurels but it’s safe to say these boots will only add to the existing pedigree of the Dubarry name. Also in the range are the Down lace up leather boot (£299) and the Derry leather brogue (£279).
But where did the name come from?
In 1937 the owners were aiming to stand out from the crowd so they looked for a little continental romance. After some research they decided upon the name Dubarry, after Madame du Barry.
Jeanne Bécu was born in Lorraine, France, the illegitimate daughter of Anne Bécu, a woman of enticing beauty who was as a seamstress. Jeanne used her good looks to briefly take several aristocrats as lovers. In 1768 she married Comte Guillaume du Barry, thus becoming Madame du Barry. In the same year she attracted the attention of Louis XV while she was on an errand at Versailles.

Madame du Barry went on to become one of France’s most well known courtesans as well as the mistress of Louis XV. So there’s plenty of style and beauty in the provenance too.
