A good pair of gloves can make the difference between having a great day's shooting and having a dreadful one - here are some of the best on the market

As the season progresses and the weather gets cooler a good pair of shooting gloves can make all the difference to your day. Cold hands make for a miserable time, but the wrong gloves can make your hands feel clumsy. Choosing the right gloves, therefore, can make the difference between a great day and a frustrating (and cold) one. Obviously they should be warm - ideally both water- and windproof - but breathable to prevent your hands getting slippery. They should also be supple enough that you can move your fingers and feel the trigger and apply the correct pressure... here are some of the best.

MacWet Climatic Long Gloves £32.99

MacWet gloves are not designed specifically for shooting, more as an all-round sporting glove. They’re made from a unique Aquatec(R) fabric which is designed to maintain grip even when wet. Not only does this make them particularly good on rainy days when other gloves may start to slip. The fabric’s wicking properties also means that they dry out quickly, even when you’re still wearing them. Although they don’t have a split or opening for the trigger finger, the snug fit makes them ideal for shooting. We’ve also found that they are excellent for fly fishing, both in UK waters and tropical saltwater conditions, either for keeping the hands warm or protecting them from line-burn.

Purdey Men’s Calf Leather Shooting Glove with Velcro Cuff - £250

undefined

Handmade in the UK, these gloves from Purdey have had a lot of thought put into them. Among the features are a heat-resistant Kevlar on the barrel hand to guard against hot barrells, a reinforced thumb to counter the wear from the safety catch, and the all important split, folding back trigger finger that allows you to feel the squeeze.

Seeland Gloves - £39.99

undefined

These Seeland Gloves are for the really cold weather - the SEETEX membrane keeps the hands warm and dry, while the anti-slip palm ensures good grip, while the elastic microfibre on the trigger finger allows you to keep your whole hand protected from the elements. The elasticated and Velcro fastening cuff ensure the wind can’t get in anywhere!

Dents Silk-lined Leather Shooting Glove - £115.00

undefined

These elegant and simple Dents leather shooting gloves feature a fold-back flap for precision on the trigger and a long knitted cuff that should stay tucked into the sleeve of your coat. Leather is generally pretty warm, acting like a second skin almost, but the silk lining on these gloves ensures comfort and warmth on the coldest days.

William & Son Shooting Gloves - £155.00

undefined

Made from water-repellant deerskin leather these William & Son shooting gloves feature an elasticated open cuff with a popper fastening for a speedy pull-on of -off. The non-trigger hand is lined with Kevlar to protect from hot barrels, and of course there’s the all-important index finger split on the trigger hand.
