The choice of refreshments served at elevenses on a shoot day can vary considerably. From sizzling locally sourced sausages fried in the field and a large glass of fizz to simple tea and biscuits, it all depends on the shoot.

In recent years however, the presentation of elevenses has been taken up quite a few notches, thanks to the rise in popularity of beautifully crafted gun boxes for cars. These nifty creations are made to fit snugly in the back of a 4x4 and generally have two drawers – one to safely lock away firearms and another to store refreshments and all the paraphernalia you could need.

Driven Day Designs

Driven Day Designs have their own take on the cabinet, the Driven-Day Battue Box. A specialist cabinet maker builds each unique box to the highest standards in a range of finishes to match the vehicle interior including walnut, oak and mahogany. All drawers are fitted with secure locks, however only one key is required for all the drawers. The gun storage drawer can be designed to your unique layout to include space for a gun cleaning kit, cartridge belt and ear defenders. As each gun box is different, a quote is available on request, priced from £750-£3,500.

James Purdey & Sons

Although not yet on the market for purchase, top London gunmakers James Purdey & Sons have a prototype car gun box in development as we speak, in conjunction with Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen in Yorkshire. The solid oak box will be made specifically to fit into the boot of a new Range Rover. It will feature two drawers with wooden compartments to fit any accessories you may need such as cartridges, a cartridge belt, gun cleaning equipment and a dog lead. There will also be a drawer specifically for refreshments, with sections for bottles and glasses to sit in. There will be an in-built humidor for cigars, as well as a table top which will pull out from the base for serving drinks. The box will be topped with Purdey leather, to match the brand’s new range of leather luggage. Price available on request.

James Horne, chairman of Purdey said: “I can’t wait to see the first prototype to be finished. There are a lot of gun boxes on the market but this can be completely modified to the buyer’s wants and needs. I have full faith in the craftsmen who are building the gunbox as they are fifth generation furniture builders and some of the best in the business. The prototype should hopefully be finished by the end of February/start of March.”
