Superb Sport In East Anglia

“I wasn’t encouraged to shoot by my father,” Nick Elsdon, of Anglia Sporting explains. “In fact, quite the opposite – I’d say he was almost against it. But I had school friends who shot, and so I saved up for a gun when I was 11 years old and have been passionate about it ever since!” Anglia Sporting became Nick’s sole occupation around 12 years ago and today he spends all but a few weeks a year looking after shooters in Suffolk and Norfolk.

“I work seven days a week through most of the season, as when we’re not taking clients out for game shooting, on Sunday, we can take them out for duck and geese in Suffolk. During the closed season I usually work six days a week, taking clients out for pigeon or stalking, though I try to keep May and June a bit quieter.”

Nick, who had been living and working in Surrey before he set up Anglia Sporting, moved to Suffolk and decided to leave behind the world of promotional merchandising, which had been his full-time occupation, and make his passion his work. “Initially I had a few other businesses going, but I soon had to decide whether I was going to do this full time or not. It was an easy decision!”

One of the secrets of Nick’s success with Anglia Sporting is the sheer variety in fieldsports that he can offer, whether it is shooting partridge over pointers, a small driven day, pigeon shooting, shooting rabbits over ferrets or wildfowl on the coast of Suffolk. “My mainstay is game shooting and pigeon shooting, but I like to think I can organise pretty much anything!”

Pigeon shooting

Nick tries to organise pigeon shooting outings so that the day is more like a game shooting day, with the same sense of occasion and feeling of camaraderie about it, rather than just leaving Guns in a hide and hoping for the best. “We can take any number from two to six guns during a day, and I make sure that the day is properly catered. Of course I also organise DIY days for those who want something simpler.”

Stalking

“We’re lucky in that we have five species of deer to stalk in East Anglia, including some very good red stags. There are Chinese water deer, muntjac, roe, fallow and reds, so there’s always plenty of choice,” Nick explains. Stalking with Anglia Sporting is either done in the traditional way, or from high seats, depending on the circumstances. The fee for an outing covers a cull animal, while trophy or larger animals will have an additional charge attached.

Game shooting

Nick offers both driven days for up to 10 guns, but also rough shooting and shooting over HPRs (hunt, point and retrieve dogs). “We work with several keepers in the area, and we can do a more formal day or walked-up and boundary days on several estates in Suffolk and Norfolk. I also have a team of people with pointers, including the HPR champion from 2015, which is an amazing day’s shooting. Essentially we can tailor the day to what the client wants!”

Wildfowling

East Anglia is renowned for its incredible coastline and wildfowling, but unless you are part of a wildfowling club it isn’t the easiest shooting to get into. Nick works with a number of farms and estates close to the coast of Norfolk and Suffolk, giving visiting guns the unique opportunity to shoot duck and geese. Some of the wildfowling is done under the moon, an experience not to be missed. “We often suggest that guns come for a morning flight before a day’s rough shooting, which can really start the day off in the most fantastic way.” There are bag limits for wildfowling and guns should remember to bring non-toxic cartridges.
