The Purdey Cup is a clay shooting competition designed for game shots. There is only one criteria that all entrants must satisfy; they must shoot the course with their own Purdey or Woodward shotgun, be that hammer gun, side-by side or over-and-under.
The competition runs from Tuesday 1st September 2020 until the end of the season, Monday 1st
February 2021. The 100 “Birds” will be shot over four sequences, each simulating a different and iconic game bird: Grouse, Partridge, Pheasant and Rock Pigeon (a stand created specifically for this competition with the birds travelling at great speed).

There will be three categories (side-by-side, over & under and hammer gun) and each month those with the the highest score shot in each category will win a bottle of wine from Berry Brothers & Rudd. The monthly winners will then be invited to take part in the ‘grand final’ in May 2021. At the grand final, they will compete for a trophy, Purdey clothing, game cartridges and yet more wonderful wines from Berry Brothers & Rudd. All entrants will also receive a limited edition Purdey Cup cap and lapel badge.
In a bid to level the playing field and give everyday guns a chance to win, not just the elite hotshots, Purdey have asked the team at Royal Berkshire to design the course and set a 'par score' that they feel an accomplished shot would be able to achieve. Anybody shooting 'par' or better, throughout the duration of the competition, will have their name entered into a prize draw, the winner of which will have their name chosen at the grand final and will be invited to join Purdey, as their guest for a day’s game shooting in the 2021/22 season.
Dan Jago, Chairman of Purdey said:
‘The Purdey Cup is an exciting and original chance for owners of Purdey & Woodward shotguns to take part in what will be a hugely enjoyable and yet relaxed shooting challenge. We are thrilled to be able to hold this season long competition at the Royal Berkshire Shooting School and we look forward to what will, I am quite sure, be a hugely enjoyable finale in May next year’.
Here at GunsOnPegs we are particularly intreagued by the notion of a 'par score' - will we one day all have a shooting handicap, and would that be a good thing?
