An Inside Look at The Purdey Trigger Plate Shotgun

GunsOnPegs · 17 Aug 2018 · 3 min read

After the exciting launch of Purdey's new Trigger Plate shotgun at the World Gunmakers Evening in May, GunsOnPegs interviewed Jonathan Irby, Head of Sales at Purdey to find out more. Here is what he had to say...

Why did Purdey decide it was time to bring a new gun to the market?

"Purdey has always sought to be an innovative gunmaker. The Purdey family and the Purdey Gunmakers have been responsible for some of the most iconic features and designs in the shooting world – not least the Beasley Self Opening mechanism.

As such it is in our DNA to evolve. Sat alongside this, the shooting world has witnessed a significant and rapid evolution in recent years with higher birds and faster cartridges often with heavier loads. Reflecting these changes, our new over-and-under shotgun has been designed to meet the demands of today’s sporting world."

What make the Purdey Trigger Plate special?

"The Purdey Trigger Plate is, from start to finish, made entirely in Purdey’s London workshop. Like all Purdey ‘Best’ guns, it passes through the traditional seven stages of gunmaking in the hands of Purdey’s world-famous craftsmen. Every part of this new gun is worked upon by Purdey’s gunmakers. It elegantly combines the skills of the craftsmen with modern technology to create a beautiful, handmade ‘Best’ Quality London shotgun with classically beautiful aesthetics and modern strength."

What are the bespoke options available to someone who purchases one?

"The Purdey Trigger Plate is a fully bespoke gun with the customary range of options, including barrel length, chamber length, choke configuration, stock dimensions, engraving, and case finish. These allow the customer to build a perfectly-fitted gun, suited to both the individual and their style of shooting."

What were the main challenges in developing the Purdey Trigger Plate?

"We were exceptionally careful to ensure that any design retained the classic looks, handling and feel that define a Purdey shotgun. Then it was about subjecting each and every aspect of the design to the most demanding testing schedule."

How long did it take to develop?

"Design of the Purdey Trigger Plate started over five years ago with the first prototype being made in 2016."

What is the waiting time for someone who would like to purchase one?

"For a bespoke option, it is between 8 - 12 months. We will be making a few guns to hold as stock for immediate delivery."

The feedback we have received has confirmed to us that we have made a gun that meets the requirements of today’s shooting world and that retains the elegance of a classic Purdey."
