Once again, GunsOnPegs is proud to sponsor the Best Media Storm / Influencer category at the 2023 Eat Game Awards. The award is intended to celebrate those doing their best to share their passion for wild food with a wider audience, educate the public about the glory of game, and giving people the tools to harvest, prepare and cook their own game.
This year’s nominees feature some familiar faces from previous years, as well as a good crop of creative newcomers. Read on to find out a bit more about this year’s runners and riders. Who gets your vote?
Tom Radford - EatTheCountry - Vote for Tom
Tom is a wild food and foraging expert who uses his impressive reach on Instagram to educate his 137K followers about the bountiful food that can be harvested, foraged and found in the UK countryside.
His on-going series of videos ‘Death or dinner’ explores the advisability (or otherwise) of consuming various wild-growing plants and fungi. Tom's humour and conversational style make his videos approachable and his subject matter less intimidating.
Bonnie Baker - Field to Fork - Vote for Bonnie
Bonnie is a farmer’s daughter who uses Instagram to highlight the seasonal produce that’s available at different times of year, sharing monthly updates on what is in season, as well as recipes, which often include game she has shot herself.
Bonnie's content focuses on healthy eating, sustainability and locally-sourced food.
Alex Russon - Hunter Gatherer Cooking - Vote for Alex
Alex is YouTuber and Instagrammer who specialises in cooking game - often harvested himself - using wild fire. His videos cover document everything from deer stalking and grouse shooting excursions to butchery, and, of course, cooking with smoke and flame.
Lionel Strub - Vote for Lionel
Lionel was born and raised in France but has made his home in Yorkshire, where he is the Chef-Patron of the Clarendon Hotel and Restaurant. The Clarendon was crowned ‘Champion of Champions’ in the 2023 Eat Game Awards.
Scott Rea - Scott Rea Project - Vote for Scott
Anyone who has googled ‘how to butcher [insert animal / cut]’ will be familiar with Scott’s easy-to-follow YouTube videos.
Simply-filmed, yet effective, Scott provides step-by-step instructions on everything from basic butchery skills to more complex recipes and techniques, including sausage making, curing and more. Over the last eight years he has amassed an astonishing 400K subscribers on YouTube.
Billy Wyatt - Giving up the game - Vote for Billy
Billy Wyatt started the Facebook group ‘Giving up the game’ as a means to distribute the spare furred and feathered game from his local syndicate.
Now with 35K members, the group is a rare haven of generosity in an often bleak social media landscape, with members offering up their spare game to those who would like it, often free of charge, as well as sharing their recipes, game prep tips and tales from the field.
Cai ap Bryn - Game and Flames - Vote for Cai
Viewers of the Fieldsports Channel will be familiar with Cai’s no-nonsense approach to cooking wild game on a naked flame.
He also runs workshops and demonstrations at events such as the Game Fair, while his recipes are often to be found in the shooting press.
Lucy Pattinson - The Fodderation - Vote for Lucy
Lucy is rapidly gaining a loyal following on Instagram where she shares her passion for wild food and cooking with fire - what she calls “adventure cooking”.
Her content includes stalks, butchery, foraging and more and draws on her experience as a private chef at lodges and estates around the highlands, as well as in fine dining establishments.
Immy Coughlan - Wiltshire Game Cook - Vote for Immy
Based in Wiltshire, Immy is a keen cook and countrywoman. She uses her Instagram account to show off her home-cooking recipes that make imaginative but approachable use of the wild game.
Her account is aimed specifically at you people, with tips for preparing and cooking game and dishes suitable for both quick-fix mid-week dinners and weekend showstoppers.
Anna Rogers - Very Good Venison - Vote for Anna
Anna Rogers was nominated for this very award in last year’s EGAs… and won! Anna’s social media presence is a no-holds-barred portrayal of the challenge of juggling family life with preparing healthy, tasty game-based meals for her husband and two children.
After her win last year, Anna told us: "While we are starting to get venison used in restaurants and on TV, I felt that there was an opportunity for it to be used in everyday meals, to try to normalise the use of venison. I wanted to show that you can feed it to your family and you don’t have to cook fancy things with it, it can just be chili or bolognese."
