British Game Alliance want you to get creative with game recipes

George Browne - GunsOnPegs · 7 Oct 2020 · 5 min read

The British Game Alliance has launched ‘#BGABites’, a campaign to celebrate shoots that serve game-based elevenses and to encourage those who don’t to try it.

At GunsOnPegs we share the BGA's belief that serving game is a must on all shoot days  – not only to celebrate game meat, but also to inspire people to experiment more with game cooking at home - so we're excited about the #BGABites campaign. The initiative seeks to encourage people and shoots to share game-based elevenses pictures and recipes on social media using the hashtag, to inspire others with easy ways to cook and serve game nibbles.

Constable Burton, a BGA-registered shoot and winner of the "Best Shoot Lunch" category in this year's GunsOnPegs Shoot Awards, is a great example of a shoot promoting game meat at elevenses. Tristan Prudden, Head Chef at Constable Burton Estate, explained why using game is important to the estate,
“At Constable Burton we are passionate about using game at elevenses to encourage our clients to try it. We try to be as innovative as possible in the way we serve our elevenses and the focus is very much on modern recipes, which are relatable to the client. From Mallard Sushi, Kentucky Fried Partridge (KFP) and Venison Sausage Rolls to Squirrel Pasties and Pheasant Goujons, we create quick and warming bites that utilise the game we are producing at the Estate. Since doing so, 95% of our clients proceed to order game on our evening menu, after trying our elevenses, as they can’t get enough. We think shoots should celebrate game meat by serving it in creative and delicious ways, ensuring that no meat goes to waste.”
BGA Chief Exec, Liam Stokes said,
“Elevenses is such a great time to think about getting creative with game. Even serving pheasant sausage rolls is a bit different and gets people thinking about when else they might want to choose game, and it is so easy to do. We want to showcase as many examples as possible of game-based elevenses, from the fanciest delicacy to the heartiest pie, whether bought online or cooked at home, to inspire others to try something new.”

Share your game-based elevenses

Recipes for game-based elevenses, or pictures of them being enjoyed in the field, can be sent directly to the BGA to feature on their website and social media channels, by using the #BGABites hashtag on Twitter or Instagram or by emailing info@britishgamealliance.co.uk.

COVID-secure game-based elevenses

The BGA will also be sharing game products and promotions from BGA-assured stockists, such as Wild & Game’s Elevenses Packs and Braehead Foods’ game sausages, as an alternative to preparing elevenses from scratch. The GunsOnPegs team were out on Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed Wild & Game's offering - the snack boxes were perfect for social distancing, each with their own cutlery - shoot elevenses made deliciously easy and 100% COVID-secure!

Spice up your game cookery

If you're already feeling creative and are looking for new game recipes to try, the BGA have got you covered. To celebrate National Curry Week (5th – 11th October 2020), they are sharing brand new game curry recipes from TV Chef Ivor Peters, also known as The Urban Rajah.  In a new recipe video available on the @britishgamealliance and @letseatwild social media channels, Ivor will show you how to cook a Pheasant Makhni curry from scratch. Here's a little taste of what to expect!

Game cooking...LIVE!

They will be hosting a virtual game curry-cooking event. Scottish-based BGA registered processor, Braehead Foods, launched a series of new ‘The Cook School @ Home’ events during lockdown. This curry evening is to be their first game cooking event and has been planned to coincide with Great British Game Week at the end of November.

Tickets for the virtual event cost £50.00, for which you will receive a box of ingredients to create a hot & sour mallard duck salad with toasted peanuts & crispy shallots as a starter followed by thai red pheasant curry, jasmine rice & coconut as main course and finished with chilled kaffir lime leaf rice pudding, poached pear & cardamom for two. Included in the price is a link to a live cooking evening on Zoom, which takes place on 26th November, to cook your curry along with The Cook School Head Chef Stuart. You will also receive an Eat Wild game recipe booklet as an added extra. Tickets are limited to 20 households, go on sale during National Curry Week through The Cook School website.

Louisa North, Head of Operations at the BGA said,

“National Curry Week is the perfect time to demonstrate the great aromatic and spicy flavours that compliment game meat so well. We are delighted to support our BGA registered processor Braehead Foods with their fantastic curry-themed home cooking event and if you would just like to learn how to cook a game curry this week, we have also partnered with The Urban Rajah to show you how!”

Speaking for myself, I saw the previous Partridge Tikka recipe shared by the Urban Raja (below) and can't wait to give it a try... and I'm really looking forward to trying the Pheasant Mahkni as well.
